About project

The Voice of Captive Ukrainians campaign or #StimmeDerGefangenenUkrainer — is an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the kidnapping of Ukrainian civilian hostages among the German target audience (activists, MPs, media, the public) and increasing pressure on russia to return them home as soon as possible.

According to the Ombudsman of Ukraine, more than 25000 Ukrainians were forcibly evicted from their homes. Among them are children, women, and the elderly.

Under international law, it is prohibited to capture civilian prisoners — because of this, there is no mechanism for the return of civilian detainees kidnapped by russian troops.

Together with a coalition of NGOs in Germany, we launched an information campaign on the problem of civilian hostages to the German audience, since our values are similar. In the future, we will continue to work on the topic, advocating at the international level for the development of working mechanisms for the return of civilian Ukrainians home.

At the moment, we have successfully united in a coalition such organizations as Vitsche and The Alliance of Ukrainian Organizations, ZMINA, PR ARMY, Deutsch-Ukrainischer Dialog e.V.), Ukrainian LGBT Initiative Kwitne Queer, Ukraine Heute, Ukrainian Union of Augsburg (Ukrainischer Verein Augsburg e.V.), Positive Ukrainer innen in Deutschland e.V., Platform Dresden e.V., Ukr Dim e.V., BUWK, Europa GrenzenLos e.V. and CRISP e.V.

By joining forces, we demand the release of detained civilian Ukrainians.

What we did

We conducted a study of the German target audience, and key messages and information materials are based on its results.

Grounding on the results of focus groups that indicate the need to provide Germans with tools to support Ukrainians and typical messages that are positively perceived by them, we focus on disseminating information about Ukrainians in the key messages that bring hope. In such a way, we get the best feedback from the audience that as other European ones have fatigue from brutal military-type news. At the same time, we are working to build the capacity of Ukrainian activists through networking, training and providing data to interact with the German audience.
