Istanbul Convention in Ukraine - Common Sense Communications

About project

PURPOSE OF THE COMPANY:

was to inform the target audience about what the Istanbul Convention is and explain the importance of its ratification.

To do this, we conducted 7-month research in the form of focus groups and a series of in-depth interviews with experts, which became the basis for the formation of goals and activities within the collective campaign.

What did we do

We also analyzed the media space and narratives on violence against women and got the basis from which we began to work out the tasks of the information campaign.

Together with the newly created coalition of NGOs, which included 50 women’s and human rights organizations such as the Ukrainian Women’s Fund, Women’s March, La Strada Ukraine, Women’s Perspectives, ZMINA and others, we promoted the idea of ratifying the convention and received support from the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Thanks to our promotional activities on social networks, we collected 25,000 unique subscribers on the website of petitions to the president and received a positive response to our request from Volodymyr Zelensky.

Evaluation of the Collective campaign

What did we do

A scientifically sound approach to communication and collaboration with experts helped us to disseminate messages that were understandable to a wider audience and that had a good resonance among them.

The campaign was supported and led by Komons (now – La Intersección).

  • Continuation of Istanbul Convention Campaign: during 2022, we supported women’s organizations working for the successful implementation of the Istanbul Convention, both in the information field and by providing them with institutional assistance.
  • Support for organizations working in the field of violence prevention: through further advocacy by Ukrainian civil society and international institutions, the Istanbul Convention was successfully ratified in Ukraine in June 2022. However, ratification does not mean implementation, so we continued to work towards deepening cooperation with Ukrainian NGOs and allocated 5 small sub-grants as support for the implementation of communication and information campaigns on the prevention of violence against women.
